Larsen Contracts successfully tendered for the contract to carry out concrete investigation and repair works to the Belfast headquarters of the Progressive Building Society. The building was constructed in the 1950s of cast in situ concrete and clad with precast panels. The scope of the works included a full concrete condition survey, investigation of the panel fixing system, re-jointing, concrete repair and the application of a anti carbonation protective coating system.
Given the landmark location of the building at one of the city centre’s busiest pedestrian and vehicular routes, the client insisted on a fast track programme in order to reduce disruption to the public. The façade was accessed by traditional scaffolding with a protective fan and hoarding to ensure containment of all site materials and the safety of the public. A detailed risk assessment and method statement had to be developed by Larsen Contracts in conjunction with the client safety representative. The continued operation of the headquarters building was of paramount importance to the client, the answer to this was Larsen’s extensive experience and flexible approach to the works. The erection of the scaffolding and the high pressure water jetting of the building took place at night so as to greatly reduce the disruption to the Client, mechanical demolition was carried out outside normal business hours allowing the uninterrupted use of the building.
