Case Study – BMS Swords Labs

Project Details

BMS Swords Labs
  • Client: Bristol-Myers Squibbs (Dalkia Facilities Management)
  • Location: Swords, Dublin
  • Main Contractor: Larsen Contracts Ltd
  • Application: Flowcrete ATB Vinyl Ester Bund lining System
  • Market: Pharmaceutical

Swords Laboratories manufactures bulk pharmaceuticals which are shipped to BMS finishing plants around the world where they are used as the key ingredients in the production of tablets, capsules and other healthcare treatment Storage and use of methylene chloride in the production process , more commonly known as paint stripper, meant that a bund lining to an existing bulk storage bund was required to address environmental concerns. Many thought the only option available was sheet stainless steel but the cost, time & difficulty to make and place a stainless liner in a bund were all undesirables.

Larsen Contracts looked to the corrosion protection team at Flowcrete for a solution. After testing and consultation with their Belgian office, we were able to offer the ATB300GL Vinyl Ester system. With downtime and Health & Safety being of paramount importance, our approved proposal involved: prefabricating the liner at our premises ;and bringing in what was effectively a jigsaw puzzle to site and fit it. A detailed survey of the bund was carried out pre-construction, 10×5 honeycomb boards were lined in our warehouse and finished, the pre- cut boards were then brought to site and mechanically fixed to the reinforced concrete bund. All fixing points and butt joints were the joint detailed with the glass matt to provide a seamless liner to the bund. Our innovative proposal reduced the shut down time of the bund and allowed the main works to be carried out off-site in a controlled, safe environment at an economical cost for the facility at Swords.
