Larsen Contracts were appointed Principal Contractor for the Construction Stage through an open tendering procedure to repair and reinstate water towers.. The tender was awarded on competency and economical factors best suited to deliver the client’s requirement. The work was carried out to two towers concurrently over a period of ten weeks. The towers were located eight miles apart; one within a residential area and the other in a rural location in South Limerick. In addition to the site logistical issues, time and cost were among the project risks that Larsen had to manage. Completion of the internal works on time was critical to the client and their supply needs to the local communities. The extent of the internal repairs were unknown until access was feasible- Larsen ensured that sufficient resources were on hand to honour the seven day internal works window for each site. DWI Approved materials were used on this project and material selection involved naturally occurring cement in repair mortars and coatings giving an additional environmental benefit. Both towers were repaired externally with a cementitious repair material and finished with an anti-carbonation coating giving a life expectancy of ten years until first maintenance. Crack stitching, where necessary, using specified approved systems were employed by Larsen operatives. Lean Construction principles were embraced to aid the successful delivery of the project on time and to budget.
