Odlums have been milling and packing flour for over 160 years and is one of the most recognised brand names in Ireland. With over 120 different products, Odlums produces 120,000 tonnes of premium flour products for traditional home bakers, novice cooks, bakeries large and small, and retailers nationwide. Its landmark Dublin Port Mill facility was built in 1924 of reinforced concrete with the original structure housing modern process equipment. The coastal environment surrounding the Mill and many years service have taken its toll on the building fabric.

Collen Project Management were appointed by the client to undertake facade investigation works and as part of this review, awarded the condition survey works to Larsen Contracts Ltd.
A full investigation of the concrete elements was carried out by our specialist team who accessed the difficult elevations by abseiling from the roof structure. The survey identified low cover and honeycombing from inadequate compaction in the original construction as the main issues. Our detailed findings enabled the project manager to compile a detailed specification and method statement for the works. After a competitive tender process, Larsen Contracts were successful in securing appointment as Main Contractor for the works.
The scope of work included the high pressure cleaning of the structure, identification of the defects, mechanical demolition and blast cleaning of the reinforcing steel. Defective concrete was repaired using Weber’s hand placed concrete repair mortar system. The facade was then treated using Weber’s high performance elastomeric anti-carbonation coating to provide long term protection to the concrete elements.
